John Joseph Spillane was born November 16, 1916 in New York City, to Edward and Ilda Spillane. He entered the Huntsville Monastery in 1950 as a priest from the Los Angeles Archdiocese. His gifts were soon recognized, 1956 he was appointed superior ad nutum of the Monastery in 1956 and elected abbot two years later.

Father Emmanuel led the Community for 26 years, until his retirement in 1982. Afterwards he was assigned as Guestmaster, ministering to guests and retreatants.

He died on May 1, 2010 at the Christus St. Joseph Villa in Salt Lake City, where he had been a resident for several years. He was interred at the at the Holy Trinity Abbey Cemetery on Friday, May 7, 2010.
