Augustine Myslinski OCSO

8th Abbot of Holy Spirit Abbey in Conyers, Georgia

* 17 July 1958 Chicago, Illinois, USA

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Father Augustine (Mark Myslinski) is one of three children; his father worked in the food industry and his mother as a secretary. In 1970, a job transfer for his late father, Lawrence, plucked the family to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where Mark attended Corpus Christi Church, just as the parish was establishing itself. His mother, Consuela, now lives in Suwanee.

He attended Clarkston High School in DeKalb County and graduated in 1976. He attended DeKalb College from 1976 to 1978 and earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy at The Pontifical College in Josephinum, Ohio. After college, he studied for three years at the St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Florida considering the diocesan priesthood. There, he earned a master’s degree in divinity.

While his classmates were being ordained as deacons in 1984, Myslinski left the seminary before ordination. After withdrawing from the seminary, he held a variety of jobs for the next dozen years, from working at a clinic helping abused women to being a house painter and landscaper. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 1999, he joined the community of monks at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. After several years of formation, he professed solemn vows in December 2005. On April 30, 2011, Bishop Luis R. Zarama ordained him to the priesthood.

During the following years Father Augustine served the community in a number of capacities, including assistant Novice Master, Sub-Prior, Cellarer (business manager) and most recently as Prior (second superior).

On May 29, 2016, he was elected as the eighth abbot of the monastery for a six-year term of office. Abbot Stanislaus Gumula of the sister monastery Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, presided at the election. On Monday August 15, the feast of the Assumption of Mary, Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, confered the abbatial blessing on him in the Abbey church.
